SPOTLIGHT ON MASSINISSA

First, a point of clarification is in order. MASSINISSA is a band but sometimes the name referes to Ali Chibane, the band leader. Highly talented and versatile, MASSINISSA is one the most beloved singers/bands of modern shawi music. GROUPE MASSINISSA was founded in 1987 under its original name AMNAY.

The band is deeply steeped in the shawi musical traditon. But Ali Chibane acknowledges the fact he was influenced by western music, in particular Pink Floyd, the British band. Another source for his inspiration is the Tergui music. MASSINISSA tackles a wide range of themes : social justice, love, history and identity. Despite all the difficulties and against all odds, MASSINISSA managed to produce over 12 albums.
